Daughter Brooke began a quest to list all the places that hosted the Freeware Hall of Fame BBS banquet since it began in (I think) 1992 at the Nook outdoors on the downtown mall.
At one of the first lunches there we numbered 24 but seldom exceeded 12 people in later years. 6 to 8 is the current count.
If you recall a restaurant we used that's not on my list, let me know.
The Nook 2∓ years (Outdoor ambience but too, too downtown - no parking)
Tiffany's, Ivy Square 10± years (We'd be there yet but they moved, sold, closed)
The Boathouse Seminole Square 3± years (We'd be there yet but they closed)
Brasserie Montiel Commonwealth Dr., 3± years (We'd be there yet but they closed)
Unknown short-lived Greek place on Ivy Rd, 3 months
Mykonos Seminole Square, 3± years (fantastic desserts but kept running out of beef)
Tip Top on Pantops, 2 months (too noisy at noon, ditto at 1:30)
Lord Hardwickes Emmet Street, 3± years (We'd be there yet if they didn't close)
Cavalier Diner (We'd be there yet if … oh, we are)
Anyone have a favorite? Brasserie Montiel is mine. A French cafe with affordable American prices, and our only restaurant with an inventive European chef.
Notable memories:
At Lord Hardwickes, due to turnover we never saw the same waitress twice.
At Mykonos al fresco meant diesel bus exhaust, noisy overhead jets and pigeons galore.
The Boathouse had a superb Hawaiian salad with sliced tenderloin.
Brasserie Montiel served Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine all day, as does the Cavalier Diner.
Cavalier Diner is the first to reserve a round banquet table for us.
There are 7 people on the banquet invitation list who haven't been to lunch in at least 5 years, two of them in 10 years, and one never. I'll buy lunch for the first person to identify Mrs. Never.
